Warner, who was awarded an honorary
doctorate of humane letters by UMW
during the ceremony. “You’re the 100th,
and I’m proud to be a part of it.”
Peppering his speech with quotes
from such celebrated historic figures as
Winston Churchill and Thomas Jefferson,
Warner focused much of his talk on
current threats to the environment and
prevailed upon the graduates to do their
part in leading the effort to save it.
“Your generation has suddenly
come into a consciousness that
we neglected,” said Warner, who
highlighted climate change and spoke
about the legislation he is sponsoring
to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions.
He implored members of the
graduating class to protect the
country from threats to freedom and
the American way of life, and urged
them to cherish the friendships they
have developed and to recognize the
importance of civic responsibility and
community service.
During the ceremony, several honors
were awarded to faculty members
and students, including Poole and
Hurley, who were presented with
Washington Medallions in recognition
of their unrelenting commitment to
the University during an immensely

challenging period. Justin C.
Simeone ’08, a history and political
science major who graduated with a
3.99 grade-point average, received
UMW’s highest student accolade, the
Colgate W. Darden Jr. Award.
Other award recipients included
Margaret Huber, distinguished
professor of anthropology, who
received the Grellet C. Simpson Award;
Keith Mellinger, assistant professor
of mathematics, who received the
UMW Alumni Association Outstanding
Young Faculty Member Award; W.
Brown Morton III, professor of historic
preservation, who won the Mary W.
Pinschmidt Award; and Brenda E. Vogel,
professor of education and director of
education programs, who received the
College of Graduate and Professional
Studies Outstanding Faculty Member
Award.
In addition, emeritus status went not
only to Morton, but also to Professor
of Chemistry Judith A. Crissman,
Professor of Art Stephen L. Griffin,
Professor of Psychology Thomas G.
Moeller, and Associate Professor of
History and American Studies Arthur
L. Tracy. Emeritus status was awarded
posthumously to Professor of Music
Patricia P. Norwood. d
