Readers Needed: Help Build UMW’s Photo Archive
The Winter 2008 issue of University of Mary Washington Magazine included a story
about UMW’s Centennial Digital Image Archive, an interactive and searchable
photo filing system, established in conjunction with Mary Washington’s 100th
birthday. The collection, which can be viewed by logging onto http://archive.umw.
edu already consists of more than 1,000 nostalgic images that string together the
history of your alma mater.
From a cloudy black-and-white 1911 photo of Mary Washington’s glee club to a
vibrant full-color shot taken at the 2004 Multicultural Fair, the pictures illustrate
UMW’s spirit and vitality – not to mention its century-long evolution from State
Normal School to University, from women only to coed.
But, some of the images in the collection are identified only partially or not
at all, and the continued success of the system depends on the shared knowledge
of UMW friends and family. With that in mind, we introduce “Get the Picture?”
a new regular feature that asks for your feedback. In each issue, we’ll showcase
an image from the University’s photographic archives and ask readers to tell us
what they know about it.
We begin with this 1956 image of Mary Washington students playing cards.
Do you recognize any of these competitive college girls? Have specifics about the
time or place the picture was taken? Familiar with the photographer who snapped
the shot? If so, drop us a line using the information at left. Your knowledge can
help make UMW’s visual history even stronger.
