ALUMNI BOARD
FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE
ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
TO: All Alumni
FROM: Barbara Burton Micou ’69
I’m writing this at the end of my two-year term as President of the Alumni Association.
I have been honored to serve Mary Washington during these past
two critical and exciting years.
It was wonderful to see so many alumni back on campus for the Centennial
Founder’s Day celebration on March 14. On an incredibly beautiful day,
several hundred alumni, including representatives from nearly every class since
1936, helped celebrate our first 100 years and were treated to the extraordinary
thoughts and words of historian David McCullough. For so many alumni, being
part of this special day reinforced their connection to Mary Washington. I
hope you enjoy the photos and coverage of the event elsewhere in this issue.
This spring, hundreds of alumni, parents, and friends attended regional
events in several Florida locations as well as in Atlanta, Philadelphia, New York
City, Washington, D.C., and in Newport News and Roanoke, Va., to kick off the
Centennial Campaign. At these events, they enjoyed remarks by the national
chairs of the campaign, Distinguished Professor of History and University Historian
William B. Crawley Jr., and his wife, Theresa Young Crawley ’77, along
with Acting President Richard V. Hurley.
Despite the rain, soggy ground, and chilly temperatures, Commencement
was yet again a glorious occasion, and I was honored to welcome the Centennial
Class of 2008, more than 1,100 strong, to our ranks.
We ended the Centennial year with Reunion Weekend, where we witnessed
the inaugural Alumni College program of “Classes Without Quizzes,” gathered
for a reception at Brompton, met our classmates for dinner in downtown Fredericksburg,
shopped in the University bookstore, enjoyed a picnic under an
enormous tent in front of Monroe Hall, and celebrated at the Reunion banquet.
The photos on this page should give you a sense of the fun and excitement of
the weekend.
The past two years have been significant and eventful for the entire University
of Mary Washington community. As we enter our second century, we
look forward with great excitement to the leadership of Dr. Judy Hample as she
takes the helm of our alma mater.
It has been an honor to serve you as President of the Alumni Association. I
have enjoyed working with a wonderfully diverse and cohesive Board of Directors,
and I pass the gavel to incoming President Sue Bridi ’81 with great pride
in all we have achieved together and all we will accomplish in the future. Stay
in touch, attend alumni events in your area, come to reunions, and take time
to renew your relationship with this splendid university. Here’s to our next 100
years!
