She celebrated with the American Heart
Association Heart Walk in Richmond,
raising more than $7,500 for this worthy
cause, and she even got to tell her story at
the walk. She continues to volunteer with
the AHA to promote women’s health.
Kathy McKenna Bonafede went
halfway around the world and ran
into Fern Stillerman Cohen, after
not having seen her since junior year.
They happened to be in the same group
touring New Zealand and Australia
and discovered each other in a gift
shop at Ayers Rock. Fern retired from
the Veterans Administration Medical
Center in Richmond, where she was a
speech and language pathologist. She
hasn’t fully retired, however, since she is
a private consultant in communications
disorders. Kathy is in the Telecom
Administration at George Mason
University in Fairfax, Va. Her husband,
Jim, is with Northrop Grumman. Their
children, Patrick and Kim, are both
in the service; Patrick is assigned to
the USS Abraham Lincoln and Kim
graduated from the Naval Academy
and is a Marine Corps first lieutenant
stationed at Camp Lejeune, N.C.
My freshman roommate, Nancy
McAllister Bishop, is in Thailand with
the Summer Institute of Linguistics
working with various
tribes, educating
them, and in some
cases helping to
develop a written
language. Nancy
left school after
her sophomore
year to pursue
medical technology,
a course not then
offered at Mary
Washington. We met
up a few years ago
when I was in Thailand and Malaysia.
She made me think of our other
roommate freshman year, Danielle
Kelly. Where are you, Danielle?
And where are all our other friends,
classmates, and soulmates? I’ve posted
my email address here, but please make
sure you have updated your addresses
and emails with UMW so we can find
you. Our 40th reunion is only three
years away! Maybe it will be the best
turnout yet! Send mail!

I hope this finds you all well and
enjoying the new year. Fall and winter
were pretty hectic for my family. There
were two weddings in October, a
daughter’s relocation from Chicago to
Texas, and then my father fell gravely
ill in November and December. There
were a lot of trips between Fort Wayne
and Virginia until the new year,
when health and a sense of normalcy
returned. In January, Earnie and I went
to Arizona. It was just beautiful and a
welcome change from Midwest winters.
Earnie rode his bike and trained for
our upcoming six-and-a-half-week
tour of New Zealand, and I enjoyed all
the available museums, art galleries,
shops, and walking trails. We both
had a tremendous time! Between all
the trips and crisis management, I met
Donna Denice ’70 one afternoon for
tea and reminiscing; it was a wonderful
time to share Mary Washington
memories. Several people wrote to share
experiences or information of interest:
Last year, 50 years after having
open-heart surgery, Bryn Irving
Roth ’71 celebrated with the
American Heart Association
Heart Walk in Richmond,
raising more than $7,500.
Suzy Passarello Quenzer still has
20 silver-star key chains and 14 navy
and silver pens that she had made for
our 25th Class Reunion. They really
are beautiful, and she’ll happily send
them to whomever requests them, as
long as supplies last. Just email Suzy
at sq3878@att.com with your address,
or call and leave her a voicemail at
404/843-2727. Thanks, Suzy!
Pam McGahagin wrote from
Atlanta that she, Joan Darby, and Joan’s
daughter, Kristina, toured London,
Paris, Switzerland, and Germany last
summer. Joan takes students from
the high school where she teaches to
Europe every summer, and this time,
Pam was able to join the group. In
October, Pam, Pat Denton Rounds, and
Diane Harvey Smith visited Harvey’s
mother’s beautiful farm in Montross,
Va. The house has been in the family for
decades, is completely renovated, and is
still a working farm.
Pam wrote that Lanona “Nonie”
Robinson’s mother passed away in
September. Please accept our collective
sympathy, Nonie.
Bridget Binko, another Framar
Friend, wrote, too! Bridget and her
husband, Fred, live in Boulder Creek,
Calif., and celebrated their 25th
anniversary by cruising in Monterey on
their sailboat. They planned to move
into a new home in Santa Cruz this
summer to be closer to the coast. After
having worked in pharmaceutical
development (most recently at Johnson
& Johnson) for 25 years, Bridget is
taking five months off to relax and
change gears before embarking on a new
career in nursing. She’ll be successful
in her studies, I’m sure, as well as in
keeping up with her hobbies of sailing,
growing orchids, gardening, and wild
mushroom foraging.
Thanks to all who wrote, and please
continue to pass your information along.

Albert “Beaver” Brewster earned a
master of social work degree from
Norfolk State University and a doctorate
from the University of Pittsburgh. He
had served in the Marines in Vietnam
before attending Mary Washington
and returned to active duty in 1982 as
an Air Force officer. Before retiring in
2006, he was director of research for the
Air Force Family Advocacy Program,
teaching clinical counseling skills,
working in research and behavioral
science for Air Force Family Medicine,
and serving as the director of medical
education at Andrews Air Force Base.
Al’s first wife died from brain cancer.
In 1982, he married Lavina;
together, they have three sons. Jason,

was killed in a tragic auto accident
shortly after his 21st birthday. Seventhgrader

and hopes to attend the Air Force
Academy. Today, Al has a small clinical
practice, enjoys boating, and is involved
with his local Methodist church.
Barbara Buchanan Shepherd

Brandon Robinson ’02 in Washington,
D.C., last summer. Faith’s husband
works for a local company now, so he
is not traveling. They hope to be able to
do more pleasure traveling soon. Faith’s
father passed away in October, then her
husband underwent four surgeries to
repair a detached retina. In February,
Faith took a seven-day cruise to the
Caribbean with her mom to recuperate.
Deborah Hoertel Masgrau

last July. She is sales manager for the
Mid-Atlantic region and is responsible
for two of Air France’s gateways,
Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.
She still lives in Virginia and works
in D.C., but visited Savannah, Ga.,
and Charleston, S.C., as possible
retirement locations. Son Sacha, a
college sophomore, is pursuing a degree
in computer science and journalism.
Deborah saw in UMW TODAY that
Donna Dowdy ’77 had passed away. If
anyone has any information about her,
she’d treasure some details.
Karen Lebo returned to a private
law firm and specializes in ethics and
business matters. She plays tennis and
golf. She and Tony enjoy fishing and
working on their home. Last fall, Karen
attended a UMW alumni meeting where
she saw Bill and Theresa Crawley ’77.
Bill read excerpts from his upcoming
history of UMW. Karen said the
excerpts were moving and entertaining,
and that Dr. Crawley’s book will be a
“must read” when it is published this
fall. The Class of 1975 hopes to see Bill
at the 35th Reunion in 2010!

Evelyn “Ebbie” Koster Linaburg
became the assistant superintendent
of schools for Shenandoah County last
year. She previously was the director of
special education and a school principal
in Shenandoah County. Ebbie and
husband John enjoy the freedom to
travel that comes from being emptynesters.
In 2007, Melissa Dowd was elected
the Commonwealth’s Attorney for
Highland County, Va. She is also the
part-time county attorney and continues
to represent private clients. Mel, who
began participating in triathlons at
age 50, recently finished third in her
age bracket in the Moomaw Madness
Triathlon. She also garnered a first-place
ribbon at a local horse show – her first.
