From Barbara Goliash Emerson: It’s
been quite some time since we’ve had
any news for the Class of ’79, so I took it
upon myself to gather some. There’s so
much happening with our classmates.
Lisa Bratton Soltis was kind enough to
send lots of information.
Lisa and Donna Anaya spent one
sunny July weekend last year tubing
down the Tye River in Nelson County.
This was Lisa’s first tubing trip and
she said it was fabulous! Following the
tubing extravaganza, the two feasted on
burgers and homegrown veggies. The
two also had tickets to the Earth, Wind
& Fire concert at Wolf Trap. In the fall,
Lisa and Donna also had dinner with
Bonnie Berry in Washington, D.C.
Bonnie was transitioning from her job
at the Discovery Channel to Hillary
Rodham Clinton’s campaign. Lisa and
Bonnie had corresponded on Facebook,
a wonderful way to find and keep up
with your Mary Washington friends!
Lisa’s daughter, Jennifer, married
Christopher Bryant in Roanoke, Va.,
last August. Randolph
Third Right was well
represented at the
wedding, with Gayle
Weinberger Petro,
Nancy Quaintance
Nelles, Donna Anaya,
Karin Hedberg,
Sally Hart Morgan,
and Shelley Roberts
Havnoonian in
attendance. Julia
Martin Belvin ’72
and Vickie Nichols
Sherertz ’78 also
attended. Everyone
had a great time
staying at The Hotel Roanoke, shopping
at the Roanoke Farmer’s Market, and
dancing to their Motown favorites!
Following the wedding, the Mary
Washington gals headed to Ferrum,
Va., and Deerwood, the home of Joe
and Carolyn Hart, Sally Hart Morgan’s
parents. Everyone was treated to
rest and relaxation in the Blue Ridge
Mountains of Virginia – nothing finer!
Sally Morgan recently went to
Mexico on an economic development
mission. She was the only female chosen
from the great state of Virginia! Gayle
Petro, who teaches in Fairfax County
Public Schools and is as wild as ever; she
has made several trips to Florida to visit
her family and Disney World. Nancy
Nelles has become an avid University of
Maryland women’s softball follower; her
daughter, Meredith, is a pitcher and has
won accolades!
Shelley Havnoonian is working
on her new home in Philadelphia.
Karin Hedberg spends time traveling
from her Boston home to visit her cute
nephews and nieces in California. In
other news, Lisa learned that Robbie
Earle Rowe moved into a new home in
Richmond, right next door to Dottie
Traweek Large ’80.
Jane Roth Baugh ’78 lives in
Roanoke and is a librarian for Woods
Rogers, the largest law firm in the
Roanoke Valley. And Lisa sees Joan
Castner Niederlehner ’77 often at
Junior League functions in Roanoke. Her
two girls, Mary Clark and Kelly, are now
in college, and both are beautiful!
In addition, Lisa reported that
she sees Lisa Carle Shields of Danville
periodically. Lisa Shields’ son, Jonathan,
attends Mary Washington and is doing
well. Lisa is busy with her new position
as a mortgage banker with Suntrust
Bank. She’s so good at what she does that
she won a trip to Jamaica.
Both Lisa Soltis and Gayle Petro are
members of the UMW Heritage Society,
which has been a great way to keep
connected with the University. Gayle
donated a portion of her life insurance
policy to the school, and Lisa purchased
an insurance policy and gave it to UMW.
Gayle’s philosophy is to enjoy the parties
while we’re living, and they’ve loved
every minute of it! If you haven’t thought
about donating to your alma mater, now
is the time – and it is a very nice tax
write-off!
For 13 years, Nancy Carroll
McDaniel ’83 and Bruce
McDaniel ’86 have lived in the
Bahamian Out Islands of Abaco,
where they designed and built
their own house on the cay, which
has been featured in Coastal
Living magazine.
UMW receives only 27 percent of
its funding from the Commonwealth of
Virginia, so the school can definitely use
our help!
Lisa added, “We are excited about
the news of Mary Washington’s first
woman president, Dr. Judy Hample, and
look forward to meeting her.” Gayle,
Lisa, Vickie Sherertz, and Donna Anaya
attended the kickoff of the Centennial
Campaign on March 14 and 15 and had
a wonderful time!
As for me, Barbara Emerson,
my husband retired in 2007 after 31
years with the Fairfax County Fire and
Rescue Department. Our son, Doug, is
a junior at Fairfax High School, where
he is active in student government and
plays lacrosse. I am the manager of
organizational development and training
for the Fairfax County government,
and I love the challenge of coordinating
the county’s strategic planning and
leadership development programs.
Several other Mary Washington
alumni work for Fairfax County,
including Mary Regan McMahon,

who supervises a buying team for the
Department of Purchasing and Supply
Management. Mary’s husband, Brian,
works for the U.S. Postal Service; son
Sean, 17, is a high school junior and an
avid lacrosse player; son Zachary, 14, is
finishing middle school and just got his
first summer job. They hoped to attend
a Regan family reunion this summer on
Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
Others working for Fairfax County
include Carolyn Bess Pantzer, a
business analyst for the Department of
Family Services, and Fatima Allibhai
Khaja ’80, a management analyst for the
Department of Systems Management
for Human Services. Fatima and I used
to work together in the Department
of Management and Budget and still
find time to catch up with each other
at lunch. Fatima’s son is a sophomore
at VCU.
For several years in the Marshall
and Russell dormitories, I lived down the
hall from Betsy Larson Kyker; now, we
find ourselves living five minutes from
each other and run into each other at the
supermarket. Betsy and her husband,
Bill, have two handsome and active sons,
Quint and Jake. They spent time during
the fall of 2007 in Australia, where Bill
was working, and are waiting to hear if
they’ll be heading down under to live
for a year. Betsy also took a brief trip to
Scotland in January.
After she left Mary Washington,
Linda McCarthy Milone ’78 earned
a master of science in foreign service
degree at Georgetown University. After
20 years, she’s married to the same
nice guy, Paul, who is an international
consultant. She still lives in Georgetown,
works in admissions at the Washington
International School, and has two
sons – Max, a senior applying to college,
and Oliver, an eighth-grader applying
to high schools. The Milones took a
fabulous family trip to Kenya for Linda’s
50th, visiting the Samburu, Masai Mara,
and Lake Nakuru. Linda and Oliver
also traveled to Peru to visit Cuzco and
Machu Picchu in March, while Paul and
Max went skiing and snowboarding in
Breckenridge, Colo.
Carol Middlebrook, who lives
in Washington, D.C., was recently
promoted to special assistant to the
general counsel of the Federal Deposit
Insurance Corp. She married John
J. Feldman III, and the two took a
belated honeymoon to Ecuador and
the Galapagos Islands. Carol is always
traveling to interesting places.
After dedicating many years
to raising her two boys, Nena Lee
Kobayashi returned to where she left off
in the workplace. Before she became an
at-home mother more than 17 years ago,
Nena worked as a project manager for
Advanced Technology, providing defense
acquisition support. In November 2007,
she returned to full-time work as a
senior data manager for Alion Science
and Technology in D.C., in support of
the Naval Sea Systems Command on the
Littoral Combat Systems Shipbuilding
program. She feels so fortunate to have
had this opportunity to transition back
into her field. Nena lives nearby and
sees Sallie Smith Hutcheson quite a bit.
Sallie has one son and works at her local
church where she assists with budget,
accounting, and administrative duties.
I also have gleaned a little news
from the Class of ’80. My sister, Patricia
Goliash Andril, retired from practicing
dentistry and is a busy artist. She
works in colored pencil and has had
three works accepted in international
competitions. Patty frequently travels to
sailing regattas around the world with
her husband, David, a partner in a law
firm in D.C., and their two teenagers,
Katie and John. John was on the national
Opti sailboat team, and Katie, another
wonderful artist, is in her junior year at
Bishop O’Connell High School. Patty’s
former roommate, Linda Jones ’80,
earned her doctoral degree at Penn State
and taught for a number of years at
Alford State in New York; she won many
teaching awards. She is now director
of engineering at Smith College. We
are proud of Linda, a former chemistry
major at Mary Washington.

Last summer, Ann Crouch transferred
with the federal government from
Alexandria, Va., to Canberra, Australia,
for a three- to five-year tour. She’s having
fun getting to know the country and
learning to drive on the other side of
the road!
Sharon Sachs Strauss now works
with the Community Action Agency,
staffing the board and managing
programs. She’s wrapping up four
years as co-chair for First Book
Montgomery, a children’s literacy
nonprofit organization. She also is
coordinating volunteers from her
synagogue to serve monthly dinners for
NIH’s Children’s Inn. Her tennis-playing
husband, Mike, made it into USTA’s
top 10 for Maryland. Son Danny is a
freshman studying business at College
Park. Daughter Julia is in high school
and helps Sharon teach kindergarten at
Beth El on Sundays. They’re still a
multigenerational household – 14 great
years with her in-laws in Chevy Chase.
Pam Clapp Hinkle, husband
Greg, and son Ian recently returned
from a two-week safari in Tanzania with
Pam’s parents, siblings, sibling spouses,
and nephews. They had a wonderful
time observing the animals, meeting
the people, and seeing the country. Pam
and Greg both started new jobs last
September. Pam is still at the Marine
