Hi Class of ’92! Please note my new
email address and send me some
updates! I haven’t received many for
the past several months, so you have
to hear about me. My husband, John,
has accepted an offer from his former
employer, Ernst & Young, to take a
position in the tax department in their
Tokyo office. John and I visited Tokyo
in February and found a place to live,
registered Mary Ella, 4, and Jack, 3,
in the American School, and met
many of his new co-workers. Tokyo is
fascinating, very Western, and yet still
unlike any place I have ever seen. There
is even a Costco! We planned to move
there in April and will be there for three
years, so I will be acting as Class Agent
from across the world. I will be an “at
home” mom for the first time ever. I’m
very excited about the chance to learn
(or try to learn) Japanese and to have
more free time with our children to
explore Japan and the rest of Asia.
Hilary Holmes Anderson and
her husband, John, are staying busy
with work and children – Ryan, 5,
and Natalie, 3 – in Arlington. Hilary
continues to work four days a week for
the DEA in the financial policy unit. She
and John are also raising Marshall, an
80-plus pound dog.
Michael Tao writes that he and
his wife, Valerie, recently celebrated
their 10-year anniversary at Sandals in
St. Lucia, where they spent most of the
time scuba diving and exploring the
rain forest. They live in Chesterfield,
Va., with their children, Gabriella, 7,
and Mitchell, 4. Michael has worked
in mortgage lending for the past 14
years and is a manager with Benchmark
Mortgage, overseeing locations in
Chesterfield and Colonial Heights. He
and Valerie are both still very active
with sports. They taught the children
snow skiing and plan to take them out
West for a big ski trip next year.

I have just accepted a position as general
counsel for a corporation headquartered
in Columbus, Ohio. As I write, I am
furiously packing my house, including
my many pets. If any of you alums are in
the Columbus area, please email me! I
don’t know anyone there.
Stephen Covert and wife Amy
Parrish Covert ’95 have a son,
Benjamin, and were expecting another
son in April. Since graduation, they have
lived in the Fredericksburg area, where
Stephen taught Spanish in middle and
high schools in Spotsylvania County
for several years before moving into
administration. He has been principal at
Ni River Middle School since 2000 and
recently completed his Ph.D. at VCU.
He currently teaches education in the
graduate program at Mary Washington
and serves on the board of editors for
the National Association of Secondary
School Principals Journal. Amy is a stayat-home
mom, has started an antiques
business, and has been published
in Lighthouse Digest magazine. As a
stroke survivor, she has served as an
ambassador for the American Stroke
Association on Capitol Hill. Stephen
reports that John Anstey and his wife,
Kara Matala Anstey ’94, recently
welcomed another daughter.
Sean Michael Dargan ’90 lives in
Madison, Wis., and continues to make
a living playing music, both with his
band and with national touring act The
Kissers. He runs a small-but-mighty
home recording studio, plays his
bagpipes daily, and cannot decide
exactly how many guitars is too many.
He and his wife, Jennifer, were expecting
their first child in August.
Jane Crisler and Chris Bennett
’89 welcomed a boy, Henry Owen, in
June 2007.
Lela “Lejai” Baldwin became
principal of Creedmoor Elementary
School in North Carolina in August
2007. After three years as an assistant
principal, she reports that it has been
quite a year running her own school.
J. Suzanne Horsley graduated
from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2006 with
a doctorate in mass communications.
She is an assistant professor of
communication at the University of
Utah.
Mary Alice Coleman Zirkle and
her husband, Richard, were to celebrate
their 15th anniversary on their farm
in Bedford County, Va., where they
raise Black Angus cattle. Mary is the
chief of planning for the county and is
sad that her college roommate, Cheryl
L. Roberts, has chosen to leave the
comforts of the big city of Roanoke, Va.,
for Columbus, Ohio.

From Amy: Craig, Ryan, and I survived
our first winter in Pennsylvania and
learned how to operate a snow blower
– what a great invention! Ryan, 1, enjoys
Kindermusik classes and doesn’t seem
to mind that his mom can’t sing very
well. With sunnier days ahead, we hope
the summer brings lots of fun for you
and your family. Keep those updates
coming!
It’s a pretty-in-pink world,
as our class has welcomed lots of
daughters in the past few years. Dru
Abramson Perdue
and Jarrett Perdue
’96 welcomed their
second daughter in
September 2006. Dru
has happily taken a
break from teaching
fifth grade to stay
home with her girls, Leah and Robin.
Jarrett continues to teach eighth grade
in Spotsylvania County.
Luke Sbarra and wife Jennifer
welcomed daughter Emilia Frances
on July 13, 2007. The family lives in
Charlotte, N.C., with their yellow
Labrador retriever, Ella, who loves to
play fetch and go for walks. Luke is an
attorney at Hedrick Gardner Kincheloe
& Garofalo, and Jennifer is a consultant
for a hospital system.
Margo Johnson Gillard’s Ellie is
now 4 and loving her second year of
preschool. Margo and Tom welcomed
baby Henry Laurence on March 27,
2007 – the happiest baby Margo’s ever
seen. The family lives in northwest
Washington, D.C., and has completed
renovation of their 1930s house, doing
most of the work themselves. Margo
occasionally does interior design work
for friends.
I had a blast from the past when I
heard from Randolph Third Wester Rick
Gurz. The former hallmate lives in Falls
Church, Va., and works in the financial
services industry as a certified financial
planner practitioner. He was studying to
be a certified investment management
analyst through Wharton and the
Investment Management Consultants
Association. His life in a nutshell:
“Basically, I manage money and provide
sound financial planning advice.”
Another former Randolph friend,
Dianna Rowell, volunteered at Comfort
Zone Camp in Blairstown, N.J., in April
and October of 2007 to help bereaved
children who have lost a parent or other
significant loved one. She rang in the
new year in Barcelona, Spain, after which
she returned home to Hoboken, N.J.,
and her postdoctoral fellowship at the
Veterans Affairs New Jersey Healthcare
System. When not working or traveling,
she is an adjunct instructor at Rutgers
University, plays in pool and dodge ball
leagues, volunteers, and enjoys the New
York metro-area social scene.
Kristen Griesert Maher ’95,
husband Jeff, and sons Brandon and
Colin enjoyed a Disney cruise to the
Caribbean, tours around Williamsburg,
and fun in Ocean City. A fun fact: Kris
and Jeff got married on my birthday,
and Craig and I got married on Kris’
birthday.
When our classmates can’t write
in with their news, it’s great to hear
from their family members. Bob
Johnson, formerly of Springfield, N.J., is
completing second year medical studies
at St. George’s University School of
Medicine in Grenada, West Indies. His
proud mother reports that Bob was a
biologist for nine years before embarking
on his medical education and “is now
doing straight honor grades.”
Kelly Coleman ’98 and Mike
Giglio ’97 welcomed triplets –
Ian, Madeline, and Emma.
From Chelle: Wedding bells are
ringing. Kurt Jensen married Deborah
K. Hiatt of St. Louis on Dec. 11, 2007,
on a beach near Waimanalo, Oahu,
Hawaii. Scott Estelle and Channing
Rich were married in the Virginia Blue
Ridge Mountains in October 2007.
Mary Washington alumni in attendance
were Erik Candy, Brian Gilligan,
Matt Nisley ’98, Tim Selgas ’98, Sarah
Stacy ’00, Steve Smith ’98, and Trent
Richardson. Scott and Channing live
in Arlington, Va. Alanna Weaver and
her fiancé, Carl, were looking forward
to attending Ally Serio and George
Younica’s wedding this spring. Alanna
recently started an MBA program
through Drexel University.
The Class of 1997 continues to
add legions of future Mary Washington
students to the world. On Aug. 29,
2007, Tara St. John Cantwell and her
husband, T.J., welcomed baby Ryan
Joseph, who joins siblings Tommy
and Rachel Marie. Amanda O’Brien
Milleisen and husband Scott are
the proud parents of identical twin
boys, Jack Thomas and Ethan James,
born Nov. 16, 2007. Anne Mason
Timberlake and her husband, Jamie,
were to add a fourth boy to their family
in June.
