CLASS NOTES
Brydon Cooke lives in Richmond
and is a youth minister for an Episcopal
church in Richmond’s West End.
Todd Curran is enjoying the beach
life in Charleston, S.C., where he has been
a project manager for HD Supply since
May 2007. He plans to reignite Omnicab
next spring after a two-year hiatus.
After graduation, Annice
Mulhare ’07 got a job as a residential
counselor with the Rappahannock Area
Community Services Board’s crisis
stabilization program. She leads group
and individual therapy for those who
are suicidal, homicidal, and psychotic.
Annice planned to marry Fredericksburg
local David Johnson on June 14, 2008, on
Cape Cod in Chatham, Mass., and move
to Boulder, Colo., to pursue her master’s
degree in transpersonal counseling
art therapy from Naropa University,
a Buddhist school specializing in
alternative psychologies such as
wilderness, art, and music therapy.
For the past two years, Megan C.
Moroney has lived in Littleton, Colo.,
and works in downtown Denver as a
lease analyst for Fidelity Exploration &
Production Co., the oil and gas segment
of MDU Resources. She bought her
own home with views of the Rocky
Mountains last August! She also is the
president of her company’s charity
committee and is applying to become
a puppy foster parent for one of the
shelters in her area. She has a wonderful
boyfriend, great friends, and coworkers,
and the new love of her life is a 7-monthold
kitten named Kiki.
Emily Langley has lived in
Arlington since graduation and has
worked as an assistant paralegal for a
corporate immigration law firm for the
last two years.
Rachel Hundley lives in
Bridgewater, Va.; is a family services
advocate for Shenandoah Valley Head
Start, where she enjoys working with
4-year-olds and their families; and works
part time at her church.
Jen Fitzsimmons works at The Inn
at Little Washington in Washington, Va.,
as part of her coursework to earn her
degree from The Culinary Institute of
America in Hyde Park, N.Y. She plans to
graduate in January 2009 and to pursue a
career as a wine sommelier.
Elizabeth Cranford moved to
Boston last August and works with
a great group of 3-year-olds at the
Harvard University preschool Peabody
Terrace Children’s Center, which bases
its curriculum on the Reggio-Emilia
approach. She loves Boston.
Emily Walsh and Mary McCarthy
planned a trip to Costa Rica in May
to visit Peace Corps volunteer Chad
Chadbourn.
Russell Friedell ’07 lives in Ithaca,
N.Y., and manages touring rock band
Jimkata. If you live in the Northeast,
you can catch him as he tours around
throughout spring and into summer in
cities including New York, Boston, and
Baltimore.
Rachelle Slotnick is finishing her
last year of culinary school at the CIA in
Hyde Park, N.Y. She spent an exciting
six months working as a culinary
extern at the Museum of Modern Art.
She anticipates moving back to the
Washington, D.C., area to find a job after
she graduates in May.
Katy Hershberger lives in New
York City and works in book publishing.
She was recently promoted to publicist
at St. Martin’s Press and has done
some freelance music journalism for
magazines and websites.
Kristen Borkoski received her
MBA with a concentration in human
resource management in May from
Stony Brook University and will pursue
her career in the New York City area.
Colleen Creegan Deere married on
Nov. 17, 2007, in New York, to Stephen
Deere, who graduated from the College
of the Holy Cross. The wedding was
attended by several ’06 UMW graduates,
including Andrea Perez, who was a
bridesmaid. Steve and Colleen live near
Fort Riley, Kan., where he is stationed as
a lieutenant in the Army. She is a fulltime
student at Kansas State University
in Manhattan, Kan., where she is
pursuing a master’s degree in English
and professional writing. She works part
time at a local law firm.
Kathleen Colduvell ’07 planned to
graduate from Villanova University in
July as a registered nurse with a bachelor
of science in nursing degree. Afterward,
she will pursue a career as a clinical
nurse specialist in the neonatal intensive
care unit. She lives in Philadelphia and
plans a November 2008 wedding to
Robert Bulafka.
Ben Franklin recently completed
his second year at Boston University
School of Law and spent the spring
studying law at Oxford University.
He planned to be a summer associate
at McDermott, Will & Emery in
Washington, D.C.

Jay finished working on Margi
Vanderhye’s campaign in the 34th
District last November, and with
Douglas Axelrod, Sang-Min Yoon,
Hardian Muljadi, and Jack Lloyd,
founded MJA Web Design LLC, a
company for small businesses. Jay hopes
to attend law school this year or next.
Daniel is closing in on his second
year with Cary Street Partners LLC, an
investment banking and advisory firm.
He and a colleague have been actively
pursuing several independent real estate

investment opportunities in the region.
Daniel attended the UMW Centennial
Celebration in March and had a great
time catching up with old friends.
Joe Petrusiak and Carolanne
Anderson live in Fairfax and planned to
marry on June 21. She is an accountant
at PBGH LLP, and
he teaches Spanish at
Westfield High School.
Sarah Sherman
began pursuing
her master’s degree
in English with
a concentration
in cultural and
performance studies
at U.Va. last fall.
She plans to finish a
thesis on avant-garde
performance and film and to graduate in
December. Last winter, she went on an
awesome trip to Israel.
Elizabeth Williams is an English
teacher at J.R. Tucker High School in
Henrico County and just got engaged
to Jonathan Nichols, a graduate of the
University of Richmond. They plan to
marry April 2009 in her hometown of
Pittsburgh and move to Woodlake in
Chesterfield, Va.
Tom Allison works in Washington,
D.C., for Media Matters, monitoring and
debunking misinformation in the media.
Stefanie Parker continues her
second semester at Yale Law School and
visited Josh Rutherford and Maggie
Kelley in Boston. Josh is studying
psychology at Boston University and
planned to receive his master’s degree
in May. Afterward, he plans to work
at Massachusetts General Hospital,
conducting research in the department
of psychiatry.
Samantha Blackburn was hired by
Boeing as an event planner/conference
center support staff member. She will
live in Manassas with her senior year
roommate, Becky Kilby ’06.
Samantha Merz is director of
Broadway Gallery, an art gallery in
Northern Virginia; her work involves
fine art sales, custom framing,
networking, and event planning. She
plans to pursue her master’s degree in
museum studies.
Laura Hatmaker is still teaching
English on the JET Programme in Japan,
where she has traveled extensively. She
hopes to go to Thailand soon and
planned to come back to the United States
in August and to live in Chantilly, Va.
Celeste LeRoux is a development
coordinator at America Abroad Media.
This summer, Kristen Matthews
plans to work for a mission organization
called Youthworks, which teaches youth
how to run practices and scrimmages for
community children. Afterward, Kristen
plans to work for the Discovery School
of Virginia, advising young men on
healthy relationships and living.
Chelsea Cartwright plans to pursue
a master’s degree in music and music
education at Columbia University’s
Teachers College in New York City.
Ashley Schumann moved to
Exton, Pa., and is pursuing her teaching
certification in elementary education at
West Chester University.
Annice Mulhare ’07 planned to
pursue her master’s degree in
transpersonal counseling art
therapy from Naropa University,
a Buddhist school specializing in
alternative psychologies.
Jonathan Martens purchased a
Yahama R6 motorcycle and landed
a paralegal position in Washington
D.C., at Crispin & Greenberg, which
primarily deals with litigation and
communications law. He hopes to take
the LSAT and move on to law school.
Peter Clark spent June 2007
through February 2008 doing a variety
of development projects to initiate
community transformation with the
nonprofit group Sports Friends in
Ethiopia and Nigeria.
Beth Hitchcock works full time for
a political consultation company that
does bipartisan, but mostly Republican,
political research used to run both state
and federal campaigns. Beth hopes to
move to Egypt for graduate education.
She is battling an advanced form of Lyme
disease that’s 85 percent debilitating, but
she remains optimistic.
Andrew Peters recently moved in
with 2007 classmates Hardian Muljadi
and Douglas Axelrod in Alexandria,
Va., and works as a GIS analyst for
Dewberry Corp.
Katie Donohue was a language
and culture assistant in Huelva, Spain,
from October 2007 to June 2008. She
is a recipient of a fully-funded grant
from the Embassy of Spain Counsel of
Science and Education. Katie teaches
English at a public high school, travels in
Europe, and is involved in other cultural
exchanges.
Alex Fletcher has joined Neil
Funkhouser Artists Management, based
in New York City, where he assists in
managing a roster of opera singers and
conductors. He has also written for
Classical Singer magazine.
Cindy Abernathy entered the
counseling psychology program at
Towson University; she has been seeing
clients, both at work and at school, all
year and says it has been very fulfilling.
She is also working on a thesis about
creativity and psychosis, trying to
understand to what degree creativity is
its own coping mechanism for people
with mental problems. She is a career
counselor at Goucher College and at
Towson University Counseling Center.
